About the Department

Philosophy is a discipline that originated in Greece around the 7th century BC, and from that time to the present day, it has been recognized as the foundation of all disciplines without a specific object of study. Based on thinking and reflection, philosophy is a vital discipline that touches and penetrates the very essence of life. Philosophy explores fundamental questions about the world, society, and human life; the basis of values and norms of behavior; the basis of knowledge and science; the logical forms of thought; and the meaning of history, religion, and art.

The Department of Philosophy at Catholic University teaches students to clearly analyze, evaluate, and reproduce the theories and discourses they encounter in the course of these inquiries, as well as the assumptions and concepts behind them. In addition, students are not only taught philosophical knowledge, but also cultivate the ability to think philosophically themselves, to look at the world and reality in a new way, and to develop problem-solving skills.

Major Course Guide

Logic

Logic, which deals with the general rules of thought, is very important because it is a common foundation for all other disciplines. By thoroughly learning the rules of reasoning, such as deduction and induction, based on the general principles of thinking such as contradiction, equality, and multiplication, students develop the ability to think systematically and argue reasonably.

History of Medieval Philosophy

This course explores in depth the various medieval efforts to develop a rich body of thought, drawing on ancient philosophy and attempting to harmonize it with Christian teachings. The medieval effort to critically embrace ancient traditions and integrate them into a changed world serves as a model for modern thinkers, especially by correcting the common mistake of jumping from ancient philosophy to modern philosophy, showing what an academically rich period the Middle Ages was.

Ethics

If human reason is the pursuit of truth, then the human will is the pursuit of good. Human actions, whether good or evil, are of great importance because they characterize the entire personality of the actor and determine the success or failure of his or her life. This course thoroughly explores the norms of human behavior, the standards of good and evil, the purpose and value of actions, and the final purpose of human beings.

Korean Philosophy

By examining the philosophical ideas that form the skeleton of our national psyche, we will gain a deeper understanding of our nation and our own mental structure, and identify the challenges for our descendants to continue to build upon this precious and proud heritage.

Metaphysics

Whereas other disciplines and branches of philosophy take as their subject of inquiry some aspect or aspect of the whole of reality, metaphysics is a highly speculative and difficult discipline that seeks to understand the whole of reality universally. It takes as its central inquiry the question of what is existence, asking how the whole of reality is structured and grounded.

Academic Activities

Philosophize

Philosophize is an undergraduate student-organized society that was founded in 1997 and has been holding academic festivals every year since then. Philosophize not only provides the basics of philosophy, but also provides various opportunities for philosophizing through creative academic presentations. It is recommended for those who want to learn more about philosophy and for students who want to deal with philosophy in depth.

Philosophy Education Action Team

We are a humanities organization that helps young people gain access to life-changing humanities experiences. The Philosophy Education Practice Team designs and delivers curriculum and programs to young people that incorporate humanistic questions. In addition, by training undergraduate students with humanities education skills, we are laying the foundation for the continuous sharing of humanities in society. The goal of the Philosophy Education Action Team is to (1) provide all youth with the opportunity to receive high-quality education, (2) build social power to resist the overheated private education market, and (3) create an environment where those who teach humanities can earn a minimum living while contributing to public service.
