가톨릭대학교 신학부에서 신학을 공부한 뒤, 독일 뮌헨 철학대학(Hoschschule für Philosophie, in München)과 레겐스부르크(Regensburg) 대학교에서 철학과 신학을 전공하여 철학박사 학위를 받았다. 이후 서강대학교, 한국외국어대학교 강사를 거쳐 1997년부터 2023년까지 가톨릭대학교 철학과 교수로 재직했다. 한국 하이데거학회 및 한국 철학연구회 회장과 가톨릭대학교 교수협의회 의장을 역임했다. 1992년 이래 경향신문과 프레시안, 경인일보 등에서 시사 칼럼을 연재하고 있다. 2022년 천주교 서울대교구 '생명의 신비상' 학술부분 본상을 수상했다. 『포스트 모더니즘에 대한 성찰』, 『지금여기의 인문학』(2011년 문광부 우수교양도서), 『철학, 인간을 답하다』, 『형이상학과 탈형이상학』,『해석학』, 『포스트휴머니즘의 유래와 도래』(2021년 세종 우수학술도서), 『생명철학』(2023년 학술원 우수학술 저서) 등 10권의 저서와 다수의 논문을 발표했다.
After studying theology at the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Korea, he majored in philosophy and theology at Hoschschule für Philosophie, in München and the University of Regensburg, Germany, and received a doctorate in philosophy. Afterwards, he worked as a lecturer at Sogang University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and served as a professor of philosophy at Catholic University from 1997 to 2023. He served as president of the Korean Heidegger Society and the Korean Philosophical Research Association, and as president of the Catholic University Professors' Council. Since 1992, he has been publishing current affairs columns serially in Kyunghyang Shinmun, Pressian, and Kyungin Ilbo. In 2022, he won the main prize in the academic section of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul's 'Mystery of Life Award'. 『Reflections on Postmodernism』, 『Humanities Here and Now』 (2011 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Excellent Liberal Arts Book), 『Philosophy, Answering Humans』, 『Metaphysics and Post-Metaphysics』, 『Hermeneutics』, 『Origin and Coming of Posthumanism He has published 10 books and numerous papers, including 』(2021 Sejong Outstanding Academic Book) and 『Life Philosophy』(2023 Academy of Sciences Outstanding Academic Book).
